I had no idea what I wanted to do other than leave school. I worked in retail, hospitality and as a labourer for the first few years of my working life and completed a TAFE course in Travel and Tourism. I was unable to secure work in that field so I started asking my friends…
I have worked both within Australia and internationally in a variety of roles, including as a Literature Coordinator, Head of Year, Head of English Department and currently as the Head of Academic Tracking & Pathways at St Hilda’s in Western Australia. I spent 8 tears teaching abroad in Singapore, London and the United Arab Emirates,…
I have been working in education for over 30 years as a high school teacher, teaching in classrooms across Australia and the UK. Throughout my career, I have taught across multiple faculties, including Creative Arts and STEM, which has given me a broad perspective on student learning and development. Over the past five years, I…
I began my construction journey in Year 10 as a non- ATAR student, where I completed a TAFE Trade Taster course and quickly realised I loved the industry. This led me to compete in the Australian WorldSkills Carpentry competition for Queensland, where I placed third. In Year 11, I completed a Certificate I in Construction…
My career path has evolved through a series of defining pivots. When I left school, I initially planned to pursue criminology, inspired by a version of the field that didn’t quite match the reality once I explored it further. After one semester, I shifted to studying International Politics at the University of Queensland, where I…
I grew up loving science and solving problems, which led me to study chemical engineering and eventually earn a PhD. I started my career working in power stations, learning how energy is made and how to keep things running safely. Over time, I became a leader in renewable energy, managing wind farms and helping communities…
When I was in Year 10 at boarding school, I described my exact job I have now to my friends. I remember it so vividly. I would be working at a school but not teaching, I would be helping young people with advice and insights on their future options, and I would have a lot…
Driven by curiosity about how business works, I started my career in marketing and brand management and made it all the way up to Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Russian Bobsleigh Federation. To take it to the next step, I went to Singapore to study an MBA. At that time innovation and…
When I graduated from school, I thought I would become an engineer because I enjoyed problem-solving and mathematics. I moved to Brisbane to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering and Mathematics at QUT while working full-time as a tutor to support myself. During my studies, I met a group of students passionate about the environment and…
I made the choice to go into engineering as I enjoyed both maths and physics and this seemed to be the most natural choice. Once I started engineering I began to slowly understand that underpinning the technical work was a humanitarian cause. Engineering to me is all about finding the most effective solution to a…
I vividly remember being in grade 4 and the teacher wheeling out the classroom TV and putting on An Inconvenient Truth starring Al Gore. That 118-minute documentary ignited a spark in me for helping the environment. Growing up I considered many careers – chef, paramedic, graphic designer – but none felt quite right. Clearly, I…
I had no clue what I wanted to do when I finished school. I dropped out of my first degree (business) after 1 semester and started full time work as an admin assistant while I figured out what I wanted to do. The State Government Computing Centre (now CITEC) was recruiting for computer operators and…
